Home Church Resource:
Prepare the Way
(Micah 6:8 Journey)
July 26 (A Micro-Talk On The History & Experience Of Racism)
Eat Together (30 min) Please practice current safety measures as we begin to gather in-person, seeking to enjoy the devotion of sharing a meal. Consider how to safely eat together (try to have each family bring food for their household, etc.).
Worship & Prayer (20 min)
“Worship is the acknowledgement of, agreement with, and yielding to lordship, wholeheartedly offering attention and affection to ascribe worth.”
Follow this LINK for this week’s Worship Resource that also has practical instructions on how to worship together on Zoom.
We are going to pause for 2 minutes to consider how we will give this week. For those that call Navah home, this is a time for you to give right now or review your giving to all God does in and through Navah. During this time, also listen and ask the Spirit if there is a need/person He wants you to bless. Let’s wait in silence for 2 minutes now. Give Online.
The Life Transformation School (LTS) will run from August 3-15 this year and will follow social distancing guidelines. This is foundational training for Navah membership and leadership. It is not a standard information course but an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to work in us, transforming us further into the image of Christ. Registration is open on the Navah website HERE.
Kids (time varies)
Consider how you integrate these kids resources from Navah Kids. Each home church will do this differently depending on the number and age of the children participating. Remember to include your kids as much as possible and have fun! See the resource HERE.
Care (20 min)
Hi/Lo or Good News Stories
Invite each person to share a brief Hi/Lo (gratitude and prayer need)
Consider having the next person who shares pray a short blessing over the previous person who shared
Message from Lisa Koons (21 min) and Discussion/ Prayerful Response (30-45 min)
"A Micro-Talk on the History & Experience of Racism" by Lisa Koons
Brief discussion of the message:
How did Lisa’s telling of a brief history of racial oppression and of her experience as a black woman affect your perspective and heart?
Notes from Teaching - Lisa Koons (Leaders: Please read through notes)
Quick reference guide of terms
Prejudice - Unfair treatment of a person or group because of race, sex, economic status, etc. Prejudice is against the ethos of the kingdom of God. Prejudice is against the heart of God. Prejudice in scripture is labeled ‘partiality’. And partiality is always labeled a sin.
Systemic racism doesn't mean lots of racists in the system. It means even if there were zero racists present, the system would still disproportionately harm people of certain races.
Unconscious bias or (implicit bias) means you’re not aware of the stereotypes & attributes & subsequent judgments you make that affect if & how you engage with a non-white person or people group.
Reflections and Prayer Points
When Jesus heroically comes on the scene, he doesn’t come to save the victim & punish the villain. He comes to save the victim & the villain.
- Pray for those oppressed by ongoing racism.
- Pray for those who practice intentional racism.
The goal is not to not see color (ie. colorblindness). We want to see the value and celebrate diversity. Acknowledge that diversity and differences strengthen, sharpen, and increase the whole.
- Pray for an increased desire to explore & learn about the history, stories, and perspectives of people of color.
Lord, help us to intentionally pursue and make space for people of color in our relational lives.
Father, help us ditch suspicion and judgement and instead believe the best about and hold an affection for those unlike us in race, culture, and economic status. God, open our eyes to the ways we can do more than not be racist. Help us become anti-racist as a way of reflecting your heart and ways to those in our corner of the world. Father, show us how to act in ways that lead to racial reconciliation. Show us how we can help heal the racial trauma people of color are experiencing. Amen.
Communion (10 min)
Ask each person/household to prepare elements ahead of time - give them a few days heads up if possible
Read short passage - 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Lead them in receiving the elements
Consider singing or reciting the doxology together (acapella)
Lord’s Prayer Together (2 min)
