Matthew 7:24-29// Obey the Word
Recap to the scripture passage for kids:
After reading the scripture passage, say something like this (try not to read from this page, but preferably put it in your own words):
The first story that Jesus tells us in this passage is about a man who built his house upon a rock. Think about what a rock is and what it feels like. It is very strong and sturdy. Jesus is like a rock. When we have Jesus in our lives it is like we are standing on a rock. We are not going to fall down when we have Jesus holding us up. We get to rely on Jesus with every part of our lives. And if we do rely on Jesus, He will not let us fall.
The second part of this story is about a man who built his house on the sand. What is sand like? It is squishy and it moves when you walk on it. The world is like sand. When we build our lives on whatever we want, but not Jesus, it is like standing on the sand. When life is hard, the foundation we are standing on gets squishy and we fall down. Without Jesus, we fall down. The foolish man’s house fell down when the storm came.
When Jesus taught this lesson, many people were amazed because they knew that He had the authority of God to teach them. They understood that Jesus was right and they needed to believe in Him and trust Him.
Additional questions for comprehension & imagination amongst kids:
- Who does Jesus say will be like the man who built his house on the rock?
- What does it look like to put Jesus words “into practice”?
- Who does Jesus say will be like the man who built his house on sand?
- What does it look NOT to put Jesus words “into practice”?
- What are some “rain and storms” that could happen in your life or have happened in your life?
- How do you think you can tell if a person is “building his house on the rock” aka living life with Jesus and obeying His words or not?
Activities to do with kids:
Building with ROCKS & SAND
Set up two different centers for children to play at.
At one center, have the children play and build with rocks. While children are building with the rocks emphasize that when we build our life around Jesus, we are building life on a solid foundation. This is what Jesus wants us to do.
At the other station have a bucket of sand (kinetic sand is a great as a less messy option) ready for the kids to play with. Remind the children that sand is always squishy and moving. This is like life without Christ; we will be like sand and easily squashed/fall when hard things happen.
Get a bucket of golf ball-baseball sized rocks & rinse them off.
Let children decorate them to celebrate “life built on the rock” of Jesus.
Act it Out
Split the group in 2 and have half of them act out the “wise” man and half of them act out the “foolish” man.
Read the following script having the appropriate group stand up and act their part out:
Jesus – (talking to the crowd) Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. (Wise Man group stands up)
Jesus – The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. (Wise Men move around as though they are being moved around)
Jesus – BUT it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. (Wise Men stand proudly)
Jesus – And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. (Foolish Men stand)
Jesus – The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house.(Foolish Men move around as though they are being moved around)
Jesus – And it collapsed and was completely ruined. (Foolish Men falls down in defeat)
